Assessment is the purposeful, systematic and ongoing collection of information that is used as evidence in making reliable and consistent judgments about student learning and in reporting to parents.
Effective assessment is used to:
evaluate the effectiveness of teaching programs
inform decisions about students’ future learning
make judgments about students’ achievements
assist student learning related to outcomes.
It is important to ensure there is a range and balance of assessment instruments and assessable elements across all Key Learning Areas (KLA) and year levels.
The assessment and reporting program:
includes a range and balance of diagnostic assessment instruments
ensures that the assessments provide evidence of the quality of student learning/work against the Australian Curriculum achievement standards aligned to the content descriptions of the KLA within a reporting period
allows for the collection of evidence of student learning over time
allows for grouping of students based on the data to better meet identified learner needs
is used to provide feedback to students, teachers and parents about learning.
Evidence of student achievement
The evidence of student achievement is collected and organised into folios.
There is a teacher managed collection, organised as each student’s student profile, and a student managed collection, or student portfolio.
The student profile stays with the school, moving with the student to the new teacher each year. The student portfolio is taken home at the end of each year as a record of achievement the student and teacher has selected.
Each collection holds a representative selection of evidence of the student’s learning in relation to the achievement standard for each learning area or subject. This evidence is used as the basis for reporting to parents.
